Because I have experience using both plugins, I’m personally using Rank Math, and one of my clients uses Yoast SEO for their websites.
In this guide, I’m sharing my knowledge and experiences with both plugins. Plus, I have spent quality time researching and testing the features of both plugins for a better comparison.
Through this guide, I’m not focusing on giving a winner or loser credit to any of these plugins.
Instead, I will go deeper into comparing the key features and some other factors, such as support and pricing. Plus, I will also share some pros and cons of these plugins.

Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: Introduction
Both are popular WordPress SEO Plugins and have good Ratings & Reviews in the WordPress Repository.
The name of Rank Math and Yoast SEO always comes at the top when it comes to WordPress SEO plugins. Both come in free and premium versions.
Yoast SEO is one of the oldest SEO plugins and was launched in 2010. It has over 10 million active installations and a 4.8 rating out of 27,755 reviews as per the WordPress repository.
Whereas Rank Math is the newest, but another popular WordPress SEO plugin, and it was just founded in 2018. Rank Math has over 3 million active installations with a 4.9 rating out of 7,034 reviews in the WordPress repository.

Yoast SEO has been there for around 15 years, and Rank Math has been there for around 7 years. So, Rank Math is very new compared to Yoast, but despite that, it is successfully beating its competitors like Yoast.
And the reason behind Rank Math’s popularity is its top-notch features, even in the free version, that are not available in the Yoast Premium.
Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: User Interface
Both have an easy-to-navigate user interface.
The user interface of your SEO plugin should be easy to use so that you can easily find SEO settings from your plugin dashboard without wasting much time.
Well, I feel that the user interface of both plugins is clean and organized, which helps you to easily find the desired SEO settings.
The only difference is that Rank Math provides a module-based interface, whereas Yoast SEO uses simple navigation tabs for its interface.
Both plugins have divided settings into sub-parts, which makes it super easy to find and customize the settings.
Plus, both plugins allow you to switch ON/OFF the plugin features. This is quite helpful, specifically for Rank Math, because it has many features, and you may not need all the SEO features. So, you can switch OFF SEO features that you don’t need to customize your plugin features for you.
For example, I have turned OFF some features in my Rank Math that I don’t need, such as Local SEO & Knowledge Graph, as you can see in the screenshot above.
Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: Features
The major reason for choosing one SEO plugin over another is the features that the plugin comes with.
The reason behind how Rank Math became a big competitor of Yoast within a few years is its top-notch features.
No doubt, Yoast SEO has been in the market for many years and has a big name in WordPress SEO. However, it offers very limited features in both the free and premium versions compared to Rank Math.
On the other hand, Rank Math comes with many advanced features, even in its free version. But with Yoast SEO, you have to either pay for those features, or they are just not available even in the Yoast Pro version.
Let’s now dive into comparing the most commonly used SEO features of these plugins. Because if I compare every feature, then this guide will become so long.

1) On-Page SEO Optimization
Both come with a good SEO checklist to help you easily optimize your content for SEO.
The most important day-to-day use of any SEO plugin is for on-page SEO optimization. Your SEO plugin should provide the latest and up-to-date on-page optimization suggestions so that you can easily optimize your content for SEO, even if you’re a beginner.
On-Page SEO Integration
Both plugins easily integrate with the WordPress editor. It means while creating content for your posts or pages, you can easily optimize for SEO.
You can access the Yoast on-page SEO optimization suggestions on the right sidebar or at the bottom of your post or page editor.
But Rank Math gives you SEO optimization suggestions only on the sidebar of your post or page content.
On-Page SEO Scoring System
Yoast SEO uses a light-based score system to measure the SEO analysis of your content as you can see in the screenshot below.
Here is the meaning of lights:
- Green –> Score is Good
- Organ –> Score is OK
- Red –> Score is bad.
Whereas Rank Math uses a number-based score to rank your content, and it ranks your content out of 100 as you can see in the screenshot below.
1.3) On-Page SEO Checklist
Both plugins come with a good on-page SEO checklist. Both give you recommendations for the most important On-Page SEO Factors such as title, meta descriptions, url, content, images, and linking suggestions.
The Yoast SEO analysis checklist only contains the SEO factors and has a separate checklist for readability analysis. Here is the list of suggestions that Yoast SEO provides you for On-Page SEO Optimization.
Whereas Rank Math’s On-page SEO checklist also contains the readability factors as well.
But for your ease, Rank Math has divided the SEO checklist into four sections: basic SEO, additional SEO, title readability, and content readability suggestions, as shown below.
2) Readability Analysis
Yoast has a separate readability analysis, but Rank Math combines with its On-page SEO checklist.
Optimizing for keywords is the core part of SEO. But behind the scenes, many other factors affect the ranking of your content, such as the quality of your content.
To bring results from SEO, you should also focus on producing quality content instead of just stuffing keywords. That means making your content readable is also important to keep your audience engaged.
If you’re a beginner content writer, you may face difficulties in making your content more readable. So, that’s why SEO plugins also come with readability analysis.
Yoast SEO has a separate checklist for readability analysis and checks for the following things to help you make your content more readable. Just like Yoast’s SEO analysis, readability analysis also has a light-based scoring system.
On the other hand, Rank Math doesn’t have a separate section for readability analysis. Instead, it combines the readability suggestions within its On-Page SEO Checklist and marks it as title and content readability under the On-Page SEO checklist.
Both plugins allow you to check the readability score before publishing your content and apply the readability suggestions to make your content more digestible.
3) Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: Keyword Targeting
Rank Math allows multiple keyword targeting even in the Free version, but with Yoast, you have to pay for it.
Keywords are the backbone of SEO, and generally, we have 1 primary keyword and a few secondary keywords per post to better optimize content for SEO.
With Rank Math, you can easily optimize your content for multiple keywords as it allows you to optimize your content for up to 5 keywords, even in the free version.
But Yoast only allows you to optimize for a single keyword with its free version. For multiple keywords, you have to get Yoast’s premium version, which allows up to 5 keywords.
On the other hand, the Rank Math Premium version allows you to optimize for unlimited keywords. Well, it may not be very useful for everyone, because most of the time, we don’t have unlimited keywords for each post.
As we usually have one primary keyword and a few secondary keywords per post/page. So, the free version of Rank Math is enough for most users, which allows us to optimize the content for up to 5 keywords.
But, in Yoast, you have to get its premium version of multiple keyword targeting.
4) Preview & Edit Search Snippet
Both allow you to preview and edit the search snippet in free versions, with a few differences.
When we search for any query on any search engine such as Google, the search results page includes a snippet of the website page related to that query that includes the website page url, title, and meta description.
Both plugins allow you to preview your content to see how it may look in the search results for both mobile and tablet devices. Plus, you can also edit the search snippet’s title, slug, and meta description.
But remember that editing the search snippet doesn’t commit that Google will only show this as a snippet in search results. Because Google can also auto-pick the search snippet from your content based on the user’s query.
The difference is that in Yoast SEO, the meta description is blank by default, and you have to write it manually.
But Rank Math by default picks the first paragraph of your post as a meta description, and in case you want to edit it, you can do that.
As we know, there are the best character lengths for the SEO title, slug, and meta descriptions. So, to help you with that, Rank Math also provides you with the character length for each of these to better optimize your content.
However, Yoast SEO does not display the character count, but its green light turns red once you exceed the character count for any of the search snippets parts, such as title, URL, or meta description.
On top of that, both plugins allow you to write your SEO meta using AI, and in Rank Math, it’s free, but paid in Yoast.
5) Preview & Edit Social Snippet
Free in Rank Math, but only available in the Yoast Premium.
Social media preview helps you to analyze how your post or page will look when it is shared on social media platforms. And also allows you to edit the post titles and descriptions for social media platforms for a better look.
With Rank Math, the social media preview and edit feature is available in the free version. Using it, you can preview your posts for Facebook and Twitter, and also edit the title, description, and use AI for writing.
However, the Social snippet feature is not available in the free version of Yoast SEO. Yoast only allows you to preview and edit social snippets in its premium version.
6) Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: Redirection Manager
Redirection manager is free in Rank Math, but paid in Yoast.
Having a redirection manager is a must-have for most websites. Because when we change the url of a post or page to something else. Then, by default, the visitors who are going to the old url will not be redirected to the new one; instead, they will get a 404 error.
To avoid this, you need a redirection manager so that you will not lose traffic, and your users will also not face a 404 error. Plus, from an SEO perspective, it’s also important to have a proper redirection setup.
As we have already discussed many times, the Rank Math plugin is well-known for the range of features that it offers even in the free version. And, the redirection manager feature is also available in the free version of Rank Math.
But with Yoast, either you have to install a third-party redirection plugin or you have to pay for Yoast Premium, which costs $99/year.
Even in the free version, Rank Math offers an auto post redirect feature, and I liked this feature very much, because it’s very helpful.
What does it mean?
When the auto post redirect feature is turned ON, you don’t need to create redirects manually for posts. Because this feature automatically creates a redirection whenever you change a post’s url slug.
7) Role Manager
Role manager is available in the free version of Rank Math, but it’s not available even in the Yoast Premium.
Using the role manager feature, you can control the user’s access to Rank Math features. This might not be very helpful for individual business owners or bloggers if only a single person is working on the website.
But if you’re running any agency or have a team, then Rank Math’s role manager can be a helpful feature for you. By using it, you can control the access of users to Rank Math SEO features.
The thing I like most about the Rank Math role manager is that I can even control the access of an admin.
For example, if I don’t want the admin to give control of my sitemap settings, then I can just uncheck this feature for Admin, and then they will no longer be able to access those features.
Similarly, you can control the Rank Math features for Editor, Author, Contributor, Subscriber, Customer, and Shop Manager.
8) Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: 404 Manager
Get a 404 manager in Rank Math for free, but it’s not available even in the Yoast Premium.
The broken pages can badly impact both the user experience and SEO. Whenever any user visits these broken pages, they often get 404 errors.
So, to have a good experience for your users and to better optimize your site for SEO. You need to find and fix the 404 errors. You can fix them by setting up a redirection.
But the question is, how will you find which pages have 404 errors?
Well, the answer is the 404 manager tool.
With Rank Math, you don’t need to get any additional plugins for 404 management. Because Rank Math comes with a 404 manager, even in the free version.
Apart from 404 Management, Rank Math also allows you to customize its settings, as shown below.
However, in Yoast, the 404 manager feature is not available at all, even in the premium version.
Yoast does provide you with the redirection manager in the premium version, as we have discussed above, but it doesn’t have a 404 manager feature.
So, without having a 404 manager, you will not be able to track which pages are getting 404 errors. And, if you’re not able to find 404 pages, then how will you set redirections to resolve the 404 errors?
In a nutshell, to track and manage 404 errors, you need a 404 manager.
And, Rank Math provides this feature for free while Yoast does not have this feature even in its premium version. So, if you’re going to use Yoast, then you will need an additional plugin for 404 management.
9) Compatible with Elementor Page Builder
Both are compatible with Elementor in the free versions.
This is quite a handy feature that both Yoast and Rank Math offer you. In case your plugin is not compatible with your page builder, then you will struggle.
Because you have to switch back and forth between your page builder editor to build the page and then switch to the WordPress editor to optimize the page for SEO.
But luckily, both Yoast and Rank Math are compatible with Elementor, even in their free version.
It means from within the Elementor dashboard, you can build and also optimize them for SEO without jumping back and forth between the Elementor and WordPress editors.
10) Local SEO
Local SEO comes even in the Rank Math Free, but it’s a separate paid plugin by Yoast.
If you’re running a local business website, then to optimize your site for local searches, you may need the Local SEO features in your SEO plugin.
Local SEO is available in the free version of Rank Math, but it’s not offered by Yoast even in the premium version.
Yoast has created a separate paid plugin for Local SEO, and it costs you around $79/yr when you purchase it individually. For more details, check out Yoast Local SEO pricing options here.
With Yoast, I see two downsides: first, you have to pay additionally for the Local SEO plugin, and second, you have to install another plugin on your site, which I don’t prefer. Because every plugin adds a bit of code that impacts the performance of our sites.
However, with Rank Math, it is pretty easy. You don’t need a separate plugin, and there is no additional cost to get Local SEO features.
Even the Rank Math free version includes a good amount of Local seo settings to optimize your site for local searches, such as choosing the business type, adding your website info & logo, address, opening hours, and contact info.
You can also set the price range, the about us page, the contact us page, the Google Maps API key to embed Google Maps on your site, and specify the geo coordinates value in the Rank Math free version.
And if you go with Rank Math Premium, you will also get premium Local SEO features such as:
- Use multiple locations to optimize your site for not only a single location but for multiple locations where your business or store operates.
- Hide opening hours if that doesn’t apply to your business.
- Choose your labels for closed and open 24/7 labels to have a personalized feel.
- Choose the primary country for your business operations.
- Customize the router label for map navigation to automatically detect the user’s location as the originating point.

11) WooCommerce SEO
The WooCommerce SEO is not for every WordPress user; this is specifically for those who run WooCommerce businesses and have WooCommerce plugins installed on their site.
The WooCommerce SEO feature is not available in the Yoast free or Premium Version.
If you need the WooCommerce SEO features, again, you need to purchase the additional plugin from Yoast, which costs around $79/year, or you can buy the Yoast Bundle. Check out more details on WooCommerce SEO pricing options here.
But with Rank Math, you get basic WooCommerce SEO settings just in the free version. Below is the screenshot of the WooCommerce SEO settings that you can manage with the Rank Math free version.
With the Rank Math Pro version, you will get even more advanced WooCommerce SEO settings for better optimization.
13) Schema
Both have a schema feature in the free version.
Schema is another great feature that most people need to add structured data to their website.
As you might have seen, when we search for something on Google, most of the time, Google shows a rich snippet at the top of search results. To optimize your website for rich snippets, you can try adding structured data with the help of schema.
Both plugins come with the schema features, and using them, you can add a relevant schema for your content type. All you need to do is choose the perfect type based on the type of your content, and the plugin will automatically add a schema for your content so that search engines can easily understand your content.
With Rank Math, you will get two different options for schema. First, you can choose the schema type from the available options. Some of the schema types are just available in the free version, but some are only available in its pro version.
On top of that, the Rank Math Pro version also allows you to create a custom schema with the possibility of creating 700+ schema types.
Yoast SEO also provides schema features in its free version, from which you can choose the one based on your content type. But in Yoast, there is no option to create a custom schema, even in the pro version.
14) XML Sitemaps
Both have an XML sitemap feature, even in the free version.
A sitemap is the other most important thing in the world of SEO. A sitemap is an index of all the pages or content of your website, which helps search engines to easily discover your content.
Plus, with a sitemap, you can include and exclude the content from your sitemap to tell search engines to easily discover what you want to get indexed from your site.
Well, both Yoast SEO and Rank Math come with the XML sitemap feature, using which you can quickly create a sitemap for your site.
In Rank Math, you will get a dedicated XML settings section, from which you can customize the settings for your sitemap, such as including or excluding pages, posts, categories, or images from your sitemap.
But in Yoast, there is no dedicated XML settings section, you have to individually go to pages, posts, categories, or tags sections to choose whether you want to include or exclude them.
The other difference is that Rank Math also easily integrates with the Google Search Console, and it can automatically submit your sitemap to the search console.
15) Index Now
Rank Math free comes with the Index Now feature, but it’s only available in the Yoast Pro.
Getting your content indexed faster is one of the most important parts of SEO. Without indexing, how will your content get ranked in the search results?
To get organic traffic, you must make sure your website is getting indexed on time, not only by Google but also by other search engines like Bing and Yandex.
So, how will you make your content get indexed faster?
For this, the SEO plugins offer you an “Index Now” feature.
Well, both Yoast SEO and Rank Math come with the Index Now feature, but as usual, this feature is available in the Rank Math free version, but it’s paid for when it comes to Yoast SEO.
When Index Now is turned ON, the Rank Math will automatically ping search engines like Bing and Yandex whenever you publish, update, or delete a post. So, this makes the process of indexing between different search engines quicker and easier for you.
Plus, you can also select/deselect the posts, pages, and media for the Indexing Now feature.
Plus, with Rank Math, you can also submit URLs for instant indexing, and in one go, you can submit up to 10,000 URLs, as you can see in the screenshot below.
17) Automatically No-follow and Open External Links in New Tab/Window
Available in the Rank Math Free version, but not possible even in the Yoast Pro.
We all know that linking is also a part of SEO, so SEO plugins also come with some handy features related to links, which can save your time.
For example, Rank Math comes with the following two handy features:
No follow External Links: If you always prefer adding a no-follow tag to external links, then with Rank Math, you don’t need to do it manually for every single external link. Because with Rank Math, you can turn ON the “no-follow external links feature” to automatically add a no-follow attribute to the external links, which is a very time-saving feature.
Open External Links in New Tab/Window: Secondly, with Rank Math, you can also automatically open all the external links either in a new tab or window. And again, this saves a lot of time, because you don’t need to do this for every external link that you’re adding to your site if you would prefer opening external links in a new tab.
And what about Yoast?
No, automatically adding no-follow and opening external links in a new tab/window is not available in Yoast as of now, even in Yoast Pro.
Hence, with Yoast, you have to manually do the settings for each external link, whether you want to add a no-follow tag or open external links in a new tab/window.
18) Automatically Add Alt Tags to Images
Available in the Rank Math free, but Yoast doesn’t have it, even in the pro version.
Adding alt tags to images is one of the best practices of image SEO optimization. So, considering this, Rank Math offers you a feature that you can turn ON, and it will automatically add an alt tag to your images.
By default, Rank Math will add your image file name as an alt tag. Well, it’s not best practice to add your file name as an alt text. But it is better than nothing.
However, on the other hand, the Yoast does not have this feature available at this moment.
19) Capitalize the Titles of Your Pages/Posts
Possible in Rank Math Free, but not in Yoast, even in the PRO.
Capitalizing is not necessary for SEO, but it helps you with the appearance and formatting of your text.
So, if you prefer capitalizing the titles of your pages/posts in search results, then this Rank Math feature can save a lot of your time. Because in Rank Math, you have a one-click feature that you can turn ON to automatically capitalize the titles of your pages/posts.
Is this automatically possible in Yoast?
Well, in Yoast, you don’t have a direct feature that you can use to automatically capitalize the titles of your pages/posts. So, in Yoast, you have to do it manually if you prefer capitalizing the titles of your pages/posts.
20) Migration from other plugins
Both plugins allow migration even in the free versions.
If you’re installing an SEO plugin for the first time on your website, then you don’t need to worry about migration.
But if you’re having an existing website and already using other SEO plugins, then you might be worried about losing your SEO settings.
Both Rank Math and Yoast SEO allow you to easily migrate your settings from seo plugins such as AIOSEO and SEOPress.
Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: Setup Wizard
Both have an easy-to-use setup wizard.
A setup wizard helps you to configure the plugin settings with a few mouse clicks, you can consider it like an onboarding. With the help of the setup wizard, you can easily configure the most needed settings in one go, and you don’t need to waste much time finding each setting.
Well, both plugins come with a setup wizard to help you easily configure the SEO settings. When you first install either Rank Math or Yoast SEO, they will redirect you to the setup wizard to help you easily go through the first-time configuration process.
However, Rank Math offers different modes for different levels of users. Such as if you’re a beginner and know nothing or a little about SEO, then you can go with the basic mode, and the rest of the settings, Rank Math will do for you.
And if you’re an SEO specialist, then Rank Math offers you an advanced mode and gives you full control over your SEO settings. The best thing about these modes is that you can switch to any mode at any time.
But in Yoast SEO, there are no such modes; the setup wizard is the same for everyone. Because Yoast SEO’s mission is “SEO for Everyone”. It gives you the same configuration process whether you are a beginner or an SEO specialist.
Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: Pricing
The next important factor that you should consider while choosing the best SEO plugin is pricing. Every individual or business has a specific budget.
As we have discussed earlier, both Rank Math and Yoast have a free version that you can use without spending a single dollar.
Yoast SEO Premium Pricing
Yoast Premium Pricing Options:
Yoast Premium: $99/year for a single website.
The Yoast Premium costs $99/year, and you can use it only on a single website. In case you have multiple websites or if you’re agency wants to use Yoast Pro for multiple client websites, then you need to pay for each license.
For example, if I need Yoast for 4 websites, I have to pay $396/year as shown in the screenshot.
And if you’re purchasing Yoast Pro for more than 5 websites at the same time, then it will give you a little discount, as shown in the screenshot below.
Yoast Plugin for Local SEO: $79/year for a single website
Yoast Plugin for WooCommerce SEO: $79/year for a single website
Yoast Plugin for News SEO: $79/year for a single website
Yoast Plugin for Video SEO: $79/year for a single website
As we have discussed earlier, the Yoast Premium plugin does not include the SEO features for Local, WooCommerce, News, and Video. Each of these plugins costs $79/year separately for a single website.
But if you purchase any of these separate plugins with Yoast Premium, then it will cost you around $145/year for a single website. For example, if I only need local SEO and Yoast Premium that I can buy the Yoast Local Premium bundle as shown in the screenshot.

With Rank Math, you don’t need to pay additionally for Local, WooCommerce, News, and Video SEO. Because all of these are included in the Rank Math Pro.
So, here are the three different plans from which you can pick one based on your specified needs.

Rank Math Pro is best for bloggers, individuals, or solopreneurs because, unlike Yoast, I can use Rank Math on my unlimited personal website. Which means whether I use Rank Math for 1 or 100 or more personal websites, the price will remain the same.

$20.99/month+ taxes & billed annually (renews at $24.99/month + taxes)
